Gonzalez has many family homes on larger lots, some with detached shops or garages. Those outbuildings get hot in summer, and a ductless mini-split can make a shop or garage usable without tying it into the house system.

Inland heat

Away from the water, summer afternoons can feel hotter and the breeze lighter. Outdoor units in full sun work harder; shade from a fence or shrubs a few feet away helps, as long as airflow isn't blocked. Fences and shrubs give useful shade, but keep at least two feet of clear space on every side of the unit and leave the top open.

A family farm and a skirmish

The area takes its name from the Gonzalez family, whose patriarch, Manuel Gonzalez, came from Spain around 1790 and served as an Indian agent before settling near Pensacola. During the Civil War the family farm held a Confederate storage facility and saw a skirmish with Union troops from Fort Barrancas. Many homes here today are newer, but ductwork in older properties may be decades old and worth a check if rooms run warm.
