Preparing Your AC for a Storm
Pensacola's history goes back to a settlement abandoned after a hurricane in 1559, and storms are part of life on the Gulf Coast. Your AC needs a little attention before and after one.
Request an AC technicianBefore the storm
Clear loose items, furniture and debris from around the outdoor unit so they can't be blown into it. Check that the unit is firmly secured to its pad or stand.
Power off
When the storm arrives, turn the AC off at the thermostat and the breaker to protect it from surges and flooding.
Don't cover it during use
Covers trap moisture and must come off before the system runs again.
After the storm
Look for debris, damaged fins, a shifted unit or water that reached the electrical parts. If the unit was flooded, don't turn it on; book an inspection.
Check the attic
Roof damage can let water reach ducts and the air handler. Wet insulation and ducts need attention quickly.
Power surges
When power returns in surges, controls and capacitors can fail. A surge protector at the unit helps.
Generators
If you use a generator, keep it outside and well away from doors and windows, and don't plan on running the AC from a small portable unit.

Insurance photos
Before storm season, photograph the outdoor unit, the data plate and the attic equipment. If the system is damaged later, clear photos make an insurance claim easier.
Restart carefully
After power has been out for a while, wait a few minutes after it returns before turning the AC back on, so the system isn't hit by repeated surges.
Flood-prone lots
If your street floods in heavy rain, ask whether the outdoor unit can be raised on a stand above the usual water level. Electrical parts that sit in floodwater usually need replacing.
